TrueGrain for Final Cut Pro

The last layer of film.

Grain sized to the gauge, halation, the blurs Final Cut doesn't have, gate weave, flicker and lens character. Put it last on the clip and choose your film size.

Running live in your browser: a WebGL port of TrueGrain's own grain, halation, gate weave and flicker passes, using the plug-in's gauge and speed tables with every other control at its default. Like the plug-in, grain is sized to the frame, so it looks the same at any resolution.

TrueGrain · 8mm

Gate weave

The film moves in the gate.

Film never sits perfectly still in a camera or projector. TrueGrain adds a slow drift plus tiny frame-to-frame jumps and a touch of rotation, scaled to the gauge, so 8mm wanders and 65mm barely moves. Watch the frame against the fixed white marks; Auto Scale hides the edges.

Lens character

Barrel distortion, with the center protected.

Bend the frame like a vintage or anamorphic lens: barrel outwards, pincushion inwards. Protect Center keeps faces in the middle untouched and lets the bend grow only toward the corners. Add chromatic fringe and a natural vignette. The grid shows exactly what moves.

The whole inspector

Start with the gauge, finish with the lens.

Choose 8mm, 16mm, 35mm or 65mm and a film speed. Because smaller film is magnified more, the gauge sets grain, halation, gate weave, flicker and softness together, so everything matches. Every section has its own eye to bypass it and a reset.

  1. 01
    Gauge and film speed

Four gauges, each with 50 Fine, 250 Medium and 500 Coarse stock, plus Film Softness.

  2. 02
    Grain

A new pattern every frame, with size, softness, colour and shadow, midtone and highlight response. Grain finer than a pixel averages out like real film.

  3. 03
    Halation

The warm red-orange glow around highlights: threshold, size, warmth and a broad aura.

  4. 04
    Blur

Gaussian, Lens with round bokeh, or Soft Focus, with Sharp Center and Bokeh Brightness.

  5. 05
    Gate weave and flicker

Drift, jumps and rotation in the gate; exposure flicker from slow breathing to frame-to-frame, with colour.

  6. 06
    Lens

Barrel distortion with Protect Center, chromatic fringe, vignette and Auto Scale.

  7. 07
    Output

Mix blends the whole effect with your original shot.

And the rest

What Final Cut is missing.

  • Real blurs

Gaussian, Lens with round bokeh, and Soft Focus diffusion, with Sharp Center to keep the middle crisp.

  • Flicker

From slow breathing to frame-to-frame exposure flicker, with optional colour shift.

  • Film softness

The gentle softness of a projected print, scaled to the gauge.

  • Halation and aura

Threshold, size and warmth for the red fringe, plus a broad warm glow.

  • Auto Scale

Zooms just enough to hide the edges that weave and distortion uncover.

  • Repeatable

Every frame renders the same way every time, in full quality or proxy.

Finish it like film.
